
Ron Covell, one of the most renowned metalshaping craftsman in the hot rod industry brings his Metalshaping Workshops to South Texas. Vintage Air will host Covell’s Metalshaping Workshops on Saturday January 9, 2010 and Sunday January 10, 2010. Saturday’s workshop is Beginning Steel which will discuss basic metallurgy, strategy for damage repair, and he will go into depth about hammer and dolly theory and technique. There will be detailed demonstrations of welding, hammer forming, hole filling, patch panels and metalfinishing. He will also give a demonstration of the English Wheel. Sunday will be Advanced Steel. The project for this workshop will is creating a ‘34 Ford Rear fender from scratch. The first step is making patterns, then the metal parts are trimmed to size. Rough shaping will be done with a mallet and sandbag, and smoothing will be demonstrated with both a slap hammer and the English Wheel. Shrinking and stretching machines will be used as required. The radiused edges will be refined with shaped dies before the panels are welded together, and the last step is creating the wired edge with hand tools. the final touch is forming a bead on the fender with a manual beading machine.
The workshops are very informal, and much time is spent answering questions asked by the participants. the cost is $190.00 per day, with lunch included. workshops are filled on a first come, first served basis, so be sure to register early, since workshops fill quickly!
